The Wager by David Grann summary: survival, mutiny, and who controls history
The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder is David Grann’s 2023 narrative history of a British naval disaster and the incompatible stories its survivors brought home.
Overview
In 1740, HMS Wager sails as part of a British expedition against Spain, pursuing military and commercial glory across dangerous seas. After the ship is wrecked off Patagonia, the stranded company faces hunger, exposure, collapsing discipline, and bitter conflict over command. Survival becomes inseparable from a political question: when formal institutions disappear, whose authority still counts?
In January 1742, thirty survivors reach Brazil in a makeshift vessel and are welcomed as heroes. Six months later, three other castaways land in Chile with a rival account, accusing the first group of mutiny. The competing charges lead to an Admiralty court martial. Grann builds the narrative from logs, diaries, correspondence, testimony, and official records while preserving the uncertainty created by self-interested witnesses.
Interpretation
Our reading: the shipwreck is both an extreme survival event and a compressed model of empire. Rank, class, and naval law continue to shape behavior even when the systems enforcing them have nearly vanished. The later trial turns storytelling into another struggle for survival: each faction must transform chaos into a persuasive moral sequence. The book therefore asks readers to examine not only which account sounds true, but which voices an institution is prepared to hear—and what the British state needs the episode to mean.
Discussion prompts
- At what point, if any, does survival justify rejecting formal command?
- How does Grann create suspense while repeatedly reminding us that the evidence is incomplete or contested?
- What changes when the court martial is read as a test of empire rather than only a dispute among sailors?
